School of Nuclear Medicine Technology - Program Options & Prerequisites

Qualified applicants must meet one of the following criteria and pass prerequisite courses listed below.

Program Option
Upon successful completion of the program, students are awarded a certificate of program completion as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist and will be eligible to be certified through examination by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

The Northwestern Memorial School of Nuclear Medicine Technology offers a 12-month certificate program. There are three options for students to become a nuclear medicine technologist:

  • Bachelor's Degree Program (3+1)
    This option is for applicants who want to earn a bachelor's degree. Students enroll in a three-year academic-affiliated University or College and participate in a 12-month clinical-based internship at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The affiliated academia, Benedictine University, DePaul University, Elmhurst College, Lewis University, North Central College, Roosevelt University and the University of Wisconsin, LaCrosse, Wisconsin provide competitive and required prerequisite and non-clinical professional courses. A grade point average of 2.5 or higher for undergraduate courses (accumulative and prerequisite science courses) is required.

  • Certificate Program for Students with a Bachelor's Degree
    This option is for applicants who have completed a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or physics from an accredited college or university with a Grade Point Average of 2.5 or higher for undergraduate courses (accumulative and prerequisite science courses) and have evidence of successful completion of all prerequisite courses.

  • Certificate Program for Radiologic Technologists
    This option is for applicants who have graduated from a JRCERT or equivalent program in Radiologic Technology and have evidence of successful completion of all prerequisite courses. Applicant must be registered by ARRT prior to the start of the program.

Prerequisite Courses
All applicants must demonstrate successful completion of the following prerequisite college-level courses and must have been completed within the last seven years.

  • Human Anatomy and Physiology
  • College Algebra
  • Statistics
  • Computer Science
  • Written Communication
  • Speech Communication
  • General Physics I and II
  • General Chemistry (2 semesters)
